Sindibad, Sinbad, Arabian nights.

 SINDIBAD

Who did not hear of the great adventurer Sindibad or Sinbad as he is known to the western world? Some of the best stories have been told about this guy. Everyone of them is jam packed with unbelievable adventure.

The origin of Sindibad goes to Shaharazad and her one thousand and one nights.  Sindibad was one of her characters, never the less, this character was based on a true one. Many people don't know that even Arabs, but Shaharazad got Sindibad based on a famous traveler at the time named "Ibn-Batota".

Ibn-Batotal was very famous at the time. He traveled so far and to lands that no one has ever heard of at the time. People started making up stories about Ibn-Batota. From those stories, Shaharazad tailed her magical stories of The Sinbad, and I use "the" because this is how the Arabs say the name "Al-Sindibad" or "The Sindibad."

The character of Sindibad has bin imagined as a mighty sailor, a young boy and some times even a teenager. Will the truth is Ibn-Batota travailed all his life, so you can imagine him at any age. On the other hand Shaharazad starts the Sinbad story as a   young foolish man. from the age of 19 to 21 give or take. His parents died and left him a big fortune. Sindibad gets surrounded by "gold diggers" People who pretended to be his friends, but all what they wanted was his money. A year passes, Sindibad losses all his money and is left with out a thing.

The only one left by his side was his old fried - many times named Hassan- Sindibad realizes how foolish he was and decides that he must travel the world. First as a merchant to regain his wealth, second as a student to learn from this endless world. After that the journey begins.

The Cartoon that was aired in many Arabic Countries, was made in Japan and dubbed to Arabic in Lebanon. In this story Sindibad is a 13 may be 14 year old boy. He just wanted to travel, his parents finely let him when his uncle promises to take care of him.

When Sindibad returns form his first trip, he finds that his parents are dead. He decides to keep on traveling. The strange thing in this story is that he meets with "Ali Baba" the character form the story Ali baba and the forty thieves. He also meets with "3ala Al-deen" or Aladdin as some might know from Disney. Now Sindibad never meet those people in Shaharazad story!  Never the less they reflected a good informed picture of the Arab world at the time. There were some very bad mistakes, but not as bad as Disney's Aladdin.

The Cartoon show I watched in the 70's was great, every one I know has watched it and  thinks it was just great. I had a message some time ago on my site asking Arabic speakers to till me which shows they would like to watch again, 90% said Sindibad.

The show was very fascinating because of the jam packed magic in every episode. There were so many Jinnies in the show that  I lost count. The Jinni of the lamp, the Jinni of the see, the Jinni of the River Nail, the Jinni of the ring, the Jinni of the Desert and a lot more!
